FIM EWC: Wepol Racing leads new Independent Teams Classification

In order to give more importance and credit to independent teams, Eurosport Events have introduced for 2018/2019 season a special classification for such FIM EWC participants. Despite the absence of the main Endurance World Championship squads (F.C.C. TSR Honda, Suzuki Endurance Racing Team, Yamaha Austria Racing Team, ERC-BMW Motorrad Endurance, SRC Kawasaki and Honda Endurance Racing), the freshly-introduced “Independent Teams Classification” includes some of the most iconic teams in the series.

The best Independent Team at last September’s Bol d’Or was Rico Penzkofer’s Penz13 Team, currently known as Wepol Racing. The German squad have just moved to Yamaha after many seasons as BMW team and despite having just two days of testing, Danny Webb, Sheridan Morais and Matthieu Lagrive finished the race in third position and this granted Rico Penzkofer’s team their third podium in 24-hour races, after the ones scored at 2017 Bol d’Or and 2018 24 Heures Motos du Mans.

Wepol Racing/Penz13 leads Independent Teams Classification with 43 points, six more than Bolliger Team Switzerland (a real benchmark in EWC, boasting more than 30 years of experience). Both EWC and Superstock teams are included in such classification and so Bol d’Or Superstock winners GERT56 (German Endurance Racing Team) lay third with 27 points, followed by Webike Tati Team Trickstar (who will switch to EWC class starting from upcoming 24 Heures Motos du Mans). Currently sixth are Mercury Racing, the best Independent Team in 2017/2018 season.
