Superbike, Misano Test: Razgatlioğlu world format, Bassani surprises

Toprak Razgatlıoğlu does better than Redding, Rinaldi and the 2019 Superpole during Superbike tests. In Supersport Philipp Öttl is the fastest ahead of Steven Odendaal.

The first day of Superbike testing ends in Misano. Toprak Razgatlıoğlu improves the times recorded in the morning and closes once again at the top of the standings. On the Romagna track, we begin to breathe the air of the world championship with many protagonists, even if his majesty Jonathan Rea is missing as well as Honda and BMW. For many riders, however, it was an opportunity to remove the winter rust while waiting for the first official tests of the season in Barcelona at the end of the month.

As mentioned, Razgatlıoğlu is the best of the day in 1.34.2. An important reference, considering that the last Superpole at Misano dates back to 2019 and was in 1.34.5 (we must remember, however, that in the meantime the circuit has been re-flatted). The Turkish rider from Yamaha is faster than the two official Ducati Aruba: Scott Redding still closes 2nd at about two tenths, while his teammate Michael Ruben Rinaldi is not far away. The big surprise on this first day, however, is Axel Bassani: the Motocorsa rookie finishes 4th in 1.35.0 and puts several opponents behind him. We are still talking about day 1, but it is certainly an encouraging start.

Behind the first four is Garrett Gerloff; the American closes one second from today’s reference on his first outing on the Misano circuit. Behind him Andrea Locatelli, who pays a second and four from his teammate. The Supersport champion opens a quartet of rookies: followed by Tito Rabat (+1.4), Lucas Mahias (+1.6) and Kohta Nozane (+2.3). The latter too, like teammate Gerloff, rode for the first time in Misano.

Finally, we find Ponsson two and seven seconds behind Razgatlıoğlu, while Michele Pirro completes the Superbike classification with a lap time of 1.37.1. Double work for the Ducati test rider: after having run in the Ducati of Chaz Davies’ Go Eleven team, Pirro got on the Panigale V4 R of the Barni team in CIV configuration. As for Supersport, however, Öttl closes the first day in the lead. Best performance in 1.38.0: Odendaal is four-tenths slower. Behind them Randy Krummenacher (+0.7) and Can Öncü (+1.0)
